The Older Grandsons

We had the pleasure of the company of our four older grandsons last weekend for their Spring Break.  They live in a new sub-division where there are purposefully no trees. (Their dad had enough of leaf raking, ice storm and damage electric outages)  When they come to Kirksville, they thrill to watching squirrels on the electric  lines!

They love it that we live across the street from a real live football field, where they can take their ball and practice field goals and tackles on real live artificial turf!  Purple at that. This year they got to follow deer trails at Taylors and view their cache of Florida shells.  They also got to drive(?) all the construction equipment you could ever hope to find together in one place. They got to drive Ian's new dune buggy and see the  new baby.

There was a sale on pop, so we let them pick out 2 bottles apiece to last them all weekend (4 days) - there were no duplicates.  They also got to pick out their own cereal.

The radio in the shower got a workout as each got to listen to part of the MU game in the shower!  Who knows what thrills a kid?

Stephen got to read before Papa's lesson Sunday AM which was a thrill to him- and us.

But they didn't get to go to the college cafeteria - it was spring break.  That was one of their goals- maybe next time, when Stephen comes to hunt turkeys.  (not to worry, turkeys!)

Flood!

When I woke up, I looked out the window to a lake in our backyard.
Ran out to the deck and could view the whole river running through it!  The water was up into our shed, but apparently not in the basement.  An hour later, when Wayne called to see if we needed help to move things, we checked the basement and voila'  a flood- but only about three inches.

The freezer resides on concrete blocks, so the water didn't get to it to short out the sump pump this time!  Hallelujah!

We had spaghetti after church tonight and sang - first time since November - it was great!  I love sitting in my recliner and singing with these great singers. I feel like I'm in heavenly company!

Looking forward to the weekend when the boys have spring break!  I'm anxious to have them come up!

We are so blessed to have well behaved grandsons that we can enjoy - I wish all grandparents had that joy!

More trip

Church activities included Dan speaking at Anaheim, Charles Fry at Norwalk, Rachel Mannnings class on Open Bible Study at Long Beach. We visited the LA Farmer's Market and Huntington Beach and Farmer's Markets there and in Cerritos- it is so fun to be able to buy fresh produce in January!  I tried a Pumelo - huge citrus fruit with very thick skin and rind - since I couldn't get anyone else to help eat it, I had it three times and still left part of it at Sheltons. It tasted very much like grapefruit.  Also tried kumquats- tiny citrus fruit the size and shape of cherry tomatoes (sorry, Kumquat 62 - I only bought two and they were gone when you requested a picture! I peeled them - they were still sour.

We got to spend some time with the Bakersfield group- Weds eve services and lunch and dinner with four generations - it was great to see and hold the new babies:  Ruth and Lydiamae. Good to see Lois Baker again.

Back in LA we showed the movie Expelled to the teens and parents and had good discussion about the concepts of evolution and freedom of speech.

We did make it to my fav city - San Diego We camped right on the bluff above the beach at Carlsbad - watched the moon go down on the water.  We had dinner with a dear Christian friend in Escondido.

We went to a state park south of SanDiego - petted the sting rays and bat rays, learned a lot about life at the beach - that I love so well.  I was even able to take a short hike out to the shore- then shuttled back to our van.

We saw Inkheart - it was kind of predictable - If I were still teaching Lanaguage Arts, I would challenge the kids to write a different version and include other novels.

We were in Tucson, another fav, and worked on the Marriage Weekend in the Artisans

Square - also visited a tiny bit of the gem and fossil fair!

Back to Pima for their first annual marriage weekend.  We showed the movie Fireproof

to 9.5 couples and had discussions about it and lessons on communication/respect, forgiveness and love.  Don;t ever think your congregation is too small to do anything - just call Janet!

Now we're on our way to KC to pick up our friend Dorene to take her to Mayo Clinic for Knee surgery 6 (in one since Jan 14 of 2008) We stayed in a motel since it's rainy and cold as we come back home - Dan is sawing logs = that's good cause he can't sleep in the daytime!  ..and I can't sleep at night!

We praise God for our safety and earnestly covet your prayers for safety in the future.

California

Today we woke up in rainy CA.  But it was nice and warm. We left home on Jan. 11, we went through Oklahoma, (our first night in OK was 13 degrees by morning) seeing a fabuous Chisholm Trail Museum in Duncan, OK, We ate barbque at Kristina's Dads restaurant.  We stayed in Plainfield Texas,  with a shopping trip to Mardel for seasonal markdowns. We arrived in Pima by spending another night in Las Cruces, NM  - one of our favorite cities. We visitd their old Mesilla Town  - where Billy the kid was tried.  And then to Pima!

Friday was a busy day setting up for Ladies' Day - then the big event!

Twenty five ladies came to share in songs and praise to God.  Four ladies presented lessons about the seasons of life, Spring, summer, fall aned winter. Is that not wonderful?  That's what the desire of two ladies can accomplish.

We had dinner with Amanda in Phoenix and met with the Phoenix congregation on Wednesday

On to Quartsite, NM home of the RVers,  Free B-fast, free lunch, free camping!  We met Herb and Sandy R. and Bert and Ina Rhea V and shared their fire!

On to LA to Duane and Janices

More later

December

Oops, already late!

December was certainly a roller coaster month for us.  Nathan finished his earthly course on Dec. 20.  He certainly set his life in order and completed all he had hoped to.  The families goal was to live in such a way they would be a witness to others and certainly others who hadn't given the Lord much thought were affected.  Of course our prayers are with his wife and parents as they go on from here.

Things we learned this month:

CaringBridge.net is a great websight for those with medical problems to post so that interested and praying adults can check on progress without so many people calling for details.

If you press your thumb against the roof of your mouth, you can stop a brain freeze.

Freerice.com is an addictive site, theortically to earn free rice for the world's poor - but a way to learn vocabulary, Spanish, chemistry, etc.  Thanks to Glen Rotan.

Goody's, Country Kitchen and El Vaquero's are all closing in KV.  Dunkin' Donuts and Maid Rite may be coming!  Good thing.  There is not a good donut to be found in this town - but who needs them?

ARDs is a bad thing.  My friend Do has had a struggle getting back - some same symptoms as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  She left home Nov. 16 to go to the hospital and has not been home since.

Weddings in December in the mountains of Colorado are beautiul.

We live across the street from the football field at TSU.  In May they dug up the field, laid pipes below for drainage and installed artificial turf. (So much rain in the summer made the completion date run late and two football games had to be played elsewhere.)

One day before a storm was coming, a machine came and appeared to hurriedly roll up the south half of the E-W field- as if they were trying beat the storm - but several weeks later, the rolls are still dodwn the middle of the field.....who knows?

Brandi is ready to start her last semeste at TSU.  She has been travelling with the Braille teacher this week and LOVES it!  She has learned a lot and been able to give feedback to the teacher.  She has quite an area to cover.

Several semesters ago, she had to write a fictional diary of a Mennonite girl who is blind.  The girl was real and Brandi had to do research on how the handicap is handled in that community.  Weds.  she actually got to meet the gal she researched and wrote about.

Our daughter has received a prestigious job promotion. She has a knack for being in the right place at the right time.  She is very capable and organized and I know she will do a great job.

Our dil is starting nursing school in January.  She has worked long and hard since she dropped out of public school at 14 because she feared for her life at that KC school.

Our trip for AZ and CA looms.  We are packing the van and excited about heading south!

Tonight we had dinner for six ( had 14 here) It was great.  We're doing the minor prophets.
